About the wire gauge calculator
Look up AWG wire dimensions, cross-sectional area, and reference ampacity — or enter a measured conductor diameter to find the nearest standard AWG size.
How it works
AWG sizes are geometrically defined — diameter and circular mils are exact for each standard size. When you search by diameter, the tool finds the closest AWG entry in the built-in table (4/0 through 40 AWG).
About ampacity values
Reference ampacity figures follow commonly published NEC Table 310.16-style values for copper conductors. Finer sizes (below 14 AWG) often show diameter and area only, without ampacity, because they are rarely used for continuous power circuits.
Limitations
Ampacity is a general reference, not an electrical code determination. Actual allowable current depends on insulation type, ambient temperature, conduit fill, bundling, and local code amendments. Diameter-based lookup returns the nearest standard AWG, not necessarily the wire you measured if it is stranded, coated, or non-standard.
